Learn your scales, breath and/or finger technique and whatever else it takes to actually play your instrument, buy an instrument that doesn't suck once you've put in the practice and the work to build a solid foundation. Find something in them that you like, figure out how they did it, then use that technique in your own work. Look at what they did and how they did it. If you're a painter, great! Get the fundamentals down - brushes, how to mix paints, basic scenes, and so on - and then do your best to emulate and reproduce Michelangelo and Monet's badassery in your own work. you can - and ought to - get that from anywhere you can. Honestly, here's how I look at artists/creative people and creating stuff, at least when I sit down to do it: The ideas have to come from you. These include breaking physics to drop into bullet time and putting a batch scene under one slug instead of writing out the exact same thing five separate times because you're not an A-list writer/director, and only A-list writer/directors get to do that. There are the rules you can't break or you'll die - the specifics of formatting spring to mind - and then there are the rules you can bend or break altogether if you have the courage and you know what you're doing. It's like the Matrix, screenwriting especially.
